NORTHRIDGE - Students from California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , lead the state in receiving teacher credentials, according to a report by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) is an independent agency created in 1970 by the Ryan Act and is the oldest of the autonomous state standards boards in the nation. The school's College of Education awarded 795 teaching credentials during 1999-2000, according to the report, more than any other public university in the state. Figures for 2000-2001 are not yet available.

The total includes 602 multiple-subject credentials for elementary school teachers and 193 single-subject credentials for high school teachers.

Rocket makers give kids a boost

CHATSWORTH - The Rocketdyne Propulsion and Power division of Boeing donated $10,500 to Lawrence Middle School Lawrence Middle School is a middle school in the Lawrenceville section of Lawrence Township, in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States, as part of the Lawrence Township Public Schools. The school teaches students in grades 7 and 8. Lawrence Middle School's mascot is the cardinal.  on Monday to buy books and software for the school's Accelerated Reading Program.

The money comes from the Boeing Fund, which has been used for a number of educational projects at Lawrence, a partner with Boeing Rocketdyne in the Los Angeles Unified School District's Adopt-a-School program.

``They represent the next generation, and hopefully they will come out of school with the skills they need to go into any number of fields, including math and sciences,'' said Boeing spokesman Dan Beck.

Delgadillo names special adviser

Los Angeles City Attorney The Los Angeles City Attorney is an elected official whose job is to prosecute all of the misdemeanor criminal offenses within the city of Los Angeles, California, United States.  Rocky Delgadillo announced on Monday the appointment of former Police Commission President Gerald Chaleff as a special adviser for risk management and liability reduction.

In hiring Chaleff, Delgadillo is turning to a lawyer with extensive experience in police matters and who was one of the major negotiators on the consent decree A settlement of a lawsuit or criminal case in which a person or company agrees to take specific actions without admitting fault or guilt for the situation that led to the lawsuit.

MALIBU - The U.S. Coast Guard on Monday identified a 55-year-old Malibu kayaker missing in the chilly ocean off Point Dume since Friday night.

A helicopter crew from Vandenberg Air Force Base Vandenberg Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 3,456 acres (1,399 hectares), SW Calif., near Lompoc; chief Pacific coast launch site for military satellites.  and county lifeguards searched for Howard Buttle until late Saturday, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Lance Jones said.

Alan Eric Hammer, 20, of Westlake Village called 911 the night before, stating, ``Sea kayak ... off Malibu ... trouble,'' Jones said.

A crew from the cutter Alert found Hammer clinging to the kayak, Jones said.

``Only a court can say (Buttle is) dead, but we exceeded a reasonable amount of time searching, considering that the water was 48 degrees and the way he was dressed and the fact we found the kayak,'' Jones said. ``We searched a 50-square-mile area before giving up.''

Judge sentences ex-cop to prison

A former Los Angeles Police Department officer was sentenced Monday to five months in prison for depriving a man of his civil rights by falsely arresting him and claiming he was carrying a concealed weapon.

U.S. District Judge Dickran Tevrizian also sentenced Edward Patrick Ruiz to five months of house arrest.

Ruiz, 37, pleaded guilty last year to violating the rights of Victor Jerome Tyson in April 1995.
