BRIEFLY COURT HEARING SET FOR WAR DETAINEES.


A federal court hearing was set for this morning in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  on a petition from civil rights advocates challenging the detention of terrorism suspects at the Guantanamo Naval Base A naval base primarily for support of the forces afloat, contiguous to a port or anchorage, consisting of activities or facilities for which the Navy has operating responsibilities, together with interior lines of communications and the minimum surrounding area necessary for local  in Cuba.

U.S. District Court Judge A. Howard Matz Howard Matz is a judge on the Central District of California. Howard Matz was appointed a United States District Judge by President Bill Clinton in 1998.

After graduating from Harvard Law School, Matz taught police science and clerked for a United States District Judge
 decided late Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists.  to consider the petition, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles by a coalition of Los Angeles clergy, journalism professors and civil rights attorneys.

The attorney for the petitioners is Stephen Yagman, known for representing plaintiffs in police abuse cases.

It is the first court challenge of the detention of al-Qaida suspects and demands that the U.S. government bring the suspects before a court and define the charges against them.

Various issues were to be considered at the 8 a.m. hearing.

Among them are whether the petitioners exhausted military and administrative procedures, whether they have standing to pursue the case, and whether the court has jurisdiction over prisoners held in Cuban territory leased to the U.S. government.

Box of explosives for training found

NORTH HILLS - Police bomb squad members Monday discovered a marked box of training explosives inside an abandoned sport utility vehicle.

``We don't want to take any chances, but no threats have been received,'' said Officer Jason Lee, a police department spokesman.

Lee said training explosives do not contain gunpowder.

Another DWP crew was working on a separate outage in Sunland, where about 50 customers lost power after crash about 2 a.m. in the 8200 block of Wentworth Street, Harris said.

Hearing to help map council spots

PACOIMA - The public is invited to a community hearing from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight on new boundaries for Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  districts.

Testimony will help guide the Los Angeles City Council Redistricting Commission in creating new council district maps in the coming months.

The hearing will be at San Fernando High School San Fernando High School, located in San Fernando, California, is a secondary school that is a part of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The school colors are black and gold. All girl teams are referred to as Lady Tigers, all boy teams simply as Tigers.

Beach death was apparent suicide

Long Beach police said that a woman who waded into the ocean fully clothed clothe

 and was found dead about 30 minutes later apparently committed suicide.

The woman's body washed ashore about 2:40 p.m. near the 600 block of Shoreline Drive, said Steve Filippini of the Long Beach Police Department.

Witnesses said the woman, who was in her 60s, was wearing a pink sweat suit when she stepped into the water and swam out to sea, Filippini said.

Three teens hurt when car hits tree

An unlicensed 16-year-old driver and two 17-year-old girls were hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries Monday after the driver lost control of the car, which crashed into a tree in Yorba Linda, police said.

The names of the driver and his passengers, who are all from Anaheim Hills, were not released, said Cpl. Tom James of the Brea Police Department, which provides law enforcement services to Yorba Linda.

The crash occurred about 2:30 a.m. on Hidden Hills Road, between Mission Hills North and Mission Hills South, James said.
