Former Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County District Attorney John Van de Kamp John Van de Kamp (born in 1936[1]) served as the District Attorney for the County of Los Angeles from 1976 until 1982, and then as 28th Attorney General of California from 1982 until 1991.  was elected the 80th president of the State Bar of California, the group announced Saturday.

The 68-year-old Van de Kamp, who also served two terms as California's attorney general, succeeds Anthony P. Capozzi.

Van de Kamp is to be sworn in at the bar's annual meeting in October. The bar president serves one year.

Man robs bank, leaves package

MALIBU - A man robbed a bank at Pacific Coast Highway Pacific Coast Highway may refer to:
  • Pacific Coast Highway (United States), a segment of State Route 1 in California
  • Pacific Coast Highway (New Zealand), a 420 kilometre highway http://www.newzealand.
 and Heathercliff Road at 9:50 a.m. Saturday and left behind a suspicious package, causing evacuation of the building.

The robber, dressed in black and wearing a motorcycle helmet, took an undisclosed amount of money, left the package on the counter, and then fled, driving down Pacific Coast Highway toward Los Angeles in a compact black sedan.

Sheriff's deputies evacuated the building in case there was a bomb in the package, which was eventually taken away by the FBI, which is investigating the case.

Public is invited to remark on plan

The Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los  will hold five open houses for the public to learn more about its draft Forest Plan, which will provide the framework for managing the forest over the next 15 years. The forest is now accepting public comments through Aug. 11.

The open houses are scheduled for:

--3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Santa Clarita Activities Center at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway in Santa Clarita.

--3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Ramada ra·ma·da  
n. Southwestern U.S.

Malibu council set to vote on ban

MALIBU - The Malibu City Council is expected on Monday to ban smoking on the city's public beaches.

Similar bans were approved by Santa Monica and Los Angeles last month.

In a 4-1 vote May 10, the Malibu council gave tentative approval to the anti-smoking ordinance.

The ban - proposed by Mayor Sharon Barovsky - would go into effect 30 days after getting final approval, according to a city representative. The vote is set for Monday.
