Juvenile inmates overcome officer

Two probation camp juveniles who were handcuffed and locked in leg restraints overcame a deputy probation officer Saturday night while he was driving them from Challenger Memorial Youth Center in Lancaster to Camp Mendenhall in the Lake Hughes area, officials said Monday.

Man identified in 2-fatality crash

An 18-year-old Chatsworth man who died in a crash Sunday on the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964.  in Burbank was identified Monday as Shant Jacques Nakkashian, officials said.

Authorities said the identity had not been determined of another male who died in the crash when the car skidded across the northbound lanes and the Alameda Avenue off-ramp.

Questions raised in skater's death

NEWPORT BEACH - An autopsy report has cast doubt on what led to the death of a 54-year-old in-line skater who authorities initially thought was the victim of a paintball attack that caused him to fall and suffer a head injury, officials said Monday.

Gary Michael Holdren, who had been in a coma for two weeks, was declared dead Sunday and his organs were harvested, said Karen Pestia, spokeswoman at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.

CBS reaches deal with Writers Guild

CBS and the Writers Guild of America The Writers Guild of America is a term often referring to the joint efforts of the Writers Guild of America, East and the Writers Guild of America, west. Hemp products under fire by DEA DEA - Data Encryption Algorithm  

The government fought a two-pronged battle in the drug war Monday, arguing in a federal appeals court in San Francisco that it can ban hemp foods and strip doctors of their licenses for recommending marijuana.

Hemp is an industrial plant related to marijuana. Fiber from hemp plants long has been used to make paper, clothing, rope and other products. Its oil is found in body-care products such as lotion, soap and cosmetics and in a host of foods, including energy bars, waffles, milk-free cheese, veggie burgers and bread.

DEA attorney Daniel Dormont said the government banned food made with hemp because ``there's no way of knowing'' whether some products may get consumers high.
