Current members voted 11-0 Wednesday to confirm their support for a ballot measure next March asking voters to allow third terms on the Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States. .

Because no 12th member was there to vote, final approval is expected next week to put it on the ballot.

Murder charges filed in hotel fire

NORTH HILLS - The owner of the Palomar Hotel in Hollywood and his stepfather were arrested Wednesday at their North Hills home on charges of capital murder and arson in the Aug. 16 explosion and fire that killed two people and injured in·jure

The murder charges stem from the deaths of Ortiz's brother, Arturo, 47, and hotel tenant Norma Guadalupe Galindo, 38.

Automobile hits, kills pedestrian

CHATSWORTH - A 51-year-old Chatsworth man killed while crossing the street outside a crosswalk was identified Wednesday as Rodney Stephen Ghilarducci.

Authorities said Ghilarducci was crossing on Lassen Street about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday when he was hit by a 1992 Ford driven by Reginald Grisham, 60, of Chatsworth.

2 give $500,000 for scholarships

Two California philanthropists have joined to award $500,000 in college scholarships to 200 students through the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, it was announced Wednesday.

Arthur A. Ciocca of The Wine Group Inc. and George L. Argyros of Arnel & Affiliates established the scholarship program.

To be eligible for the scholarships, students must demonstrate financial need and ``honesty, hard work, determination and perseverance in overcoming adversity,'' a written statement says.

Applications from high school seniors are being accepted at www.horatioalger.com/scholarships.

 restaurant in the 23300 block of Lyons Avenue in Newhall pursued a vehicle for about one minute before it crashed on the Valencia Boulevard off-ramp, said sheriff's Lt. Larry Gump.

The driver fled the vehicle and ran toward the nearby community college campus, but police cordoned off the area and found him in the brush, Gump said.

Police investigate Burbank killing

BURBANK - Police responding to a call of shots fired on Wednesday evening found a body believed to be that of a male in a wash in the 300 block of West Spazier Avenue, authorities said.

Burbank Lt. Kevin Krafft said police were investigating the incident as possibly gang-related.
