BRIEFLY COUNCIL OPPOSES L.A. ANGELS NAME.


Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  officials, saying the owners of the Anaheim Angels baseball team should not throw fans a curve, came out Wednesday against the team appropriating the name of Los Angeles.

``If they want to call themselves the Los Angeles Angels, they can move back to Los Angeles,'' City Council President Alex Padilla Alex Padilla is a politician in California. He was elected as the State Senator for the 20th District of California in November 2006 and was inaugurated in early December. In order to enter the Senate he had to resign as Councilman for the 7th District on the Los Angeles City  said. ``When it comes to using the name of Los Angeles, I think we have to be a little protective.''

Angels owner Arte Moreno has said he is considering the name change to improve his team's recognition factor. Anaheim officials also oppose the name change.

THOUSAND OAKS - The City Council voted 4-0 to spend $60,000 to cover the costs of beefing up security at City Hall this year.

Woman is struck, pinned by pickup

GLENDALE - A woman run over and briefly pinned beneath a pickup truck in Glendale on Wednesday was later airlifted to County/USC Medical Center, according to police.

The incident occurred in the 1300 block of East Maple Street about 5:30 p.m., said Sgt. Tom Lorenz of the Glendale Police Department. There was no official word on the patient's condition. The driver of the pickup truck was being questioned by police, Lorenz said.

Santa Clarita man killed on duty in Iraq

The U.S. Department of Defense on Wednesday reported that a Santa Clarita man was killed in Iraq.

Army Pfc. Jose Ricardo Flores-Mejia, 21, was killed Tuesday when an explosive hit his convoy in Mosul, Iraq, officials said.

Police still seek rapper in stabbing

SANTA MONICA - A rapper wanted for a stabbing during the taping of the second annual Vibe Awards in Santa Monica remained at large Wednesday, authorities said.
