Los Angeles 1953), member of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 4th district. He has served since 2001, taking over the position upon the death of John Ferraro.  will co-host the event, scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Starlight Cascade Room at Sportsmen's Lodge The Sportsmen's Lodge in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles, California is something of a kitsch landmark but remains a popular spot for celebrations, dinners and public events. , 12833 Ventura Blvd.

Prosecutors allege Shakhov was under the influence of prescription muscle-relaxants when her car rear-ended Johnson's at a red light near Westlake High School.

Johnson, a popular sprinter on the school's track team, was declared brain-dead and removed from life support a day after the crash.

Panel to discuss wildlife habitats

PACOIMA - State officials and community representatives will meet this evening to discuss ways of increasing open spaces and creating wildlife habitats to improve the quality of life in the northeast San Fernando Valley.

The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. in the Vaughn Next Century Learning Center Auditorium at 13330 Vaughn St.

Deputies honored for acts of bravery

VENTURA - Eight Ventura County sheriff's deputies were lauded by county supervisors Tuesday for their bravery when a gunman opened fire on the East County sheriff's station last year.

Supervisors presented proclamations to deputies Joe Rivas and Chris Coulter; senior deputies Pat Dain, Dan Ambarian and Larry Logan; sergeants Dave Wareham and Patti Salas; and Capt. Ken Cozzens.

All were present on Aug. 5 when gunman Gregg Hackett opened fire on the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  station. Hackett, 48, of Thousand Oaks was shot by police numerous times and died at the scene.

Missing woman dead in Mexico

GLENDALE - An 80-year-old diabetic woman who apparently drove to Mexico by mistake was found Tuesday dead in her car, police said, but foul play was not suspected.

Nina Bagley left a party in Tujunga about 7:30 p.m. Sunday and was supposed to go to her Glendale home, said Glendale police Officer Leticia Chang.

Tuesday afternoon, Bagley was found dead in Mexico, Chang said.

Prop. 187 backer halts latest try

The latest attempt to resurrect Proposition 187, the 1994 initiative banning public services to undocumented immigrants, has been abandoned, the backer of the effort announced Tuesday.

Ron Prince, who authored both the 1994 measure and the new version, blamed the latest failure on a lack of money to pay for petition signature gatherers and on ``opposition from the Republican Party establishment.''

The deadline for collecting 598,000 signatures is Thursday.

Boy lost in floods in December ID'd

SAN BERNARDINO - The skeletal remains of an 11-year-old boy swept away from a mountainside camp in Christmas Day mudslides have been found 15 miles away, coroner's officials said Tuesday.

Authorities used dental records to identify Edgar David Meza as the 16th victim of the Dec. 25 mudslides and flash floods which also killed his father, 29-year-old Ramon Meza. Workers clearing bamboo found the child's remains Monday in a thicket of weeds.
