NORTH HILLS - An off-duty Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police officer was expected to survive after accidentally shooting himself in his groin while cleaning his gun Saturday at a residence in North Hills, a police spokesman said.

The accidental shooting occurred Saturday afternoon while the officer was cleaning his gun, said Los Angeles police officer Don Cox.

The officer's name, whereabouts and condition were not being released.

Pedestrian killed while in crosswalk

A pedestrian was hit and killed while walking in a Van Nuys crosswalk late Friday, police said Saturday.

The 60-year-old man, whose name was not released by police, was walking in the crosswalk against the red light around 11:15 p.m. when he was hit by a car at Victory and Balboa boulevards. The man died at the scene.

The car was headed south on Balboa Boulevard when the pedestrian was in the crosswalk. The driver was not speeding or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Paul Modrell of the Valley Traffic Division.
