BRIEFLY COMPANY TO PAY $40,000 PENALTY.


A Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  company and its two principals have agreed to pay a $40,000 civil penalty to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that they engaged in deceptive practices on the online sales of generic and remanufactured ink-jet printer cartridges, officials said Friday.

Authorities said E-Babylon Inc., and its two principals, Michael Zaya and Aidin Yousif, deceptively represented on their Web sites that their ink-jet printer replacement cartridges were new, brand-name items, rather than remanufactured or generic items.

EZpass to boost transit freedom

Starting Sunday, transit riders will be able to buy a monthly pass that will be accepted by Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County's 12 largest transportation agencies.

``Users of the Regional EZpass will no longer need transfers or to carry extra cash or purchase additional transit passes,'' said Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board Chairman Hal Bernson Hal Bernson served as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 12th district. He was chair of the Transportation Committee. Prior to being on the City Council, he served in the Navy.

 Customer Centers, Ralphs grocery stores and other locations, said Marc Littman of the MTA. The Regional EZpass will cost $58 for adults and $29 for seniors and the disabled.

The pass will give transit riders the right to unlimited local travel on all MTA buses and trains and on the fixed-route bus systems of 11 other transportation agencies.

Among the weapons seized when probation officers made 130 unannounced searches last month were eight handguns, three rifles or shotguns and one assault rifle, Antonovich said.

Sixty-nine probationers were arrested as a result of the searches, 26 of them juveniles, he said.

Since the program was started in February 2000, about half the probationers searched have been found to be in violation of the terms of their probation, according to Antonovich.

Chief Probation Officer Richard Shumsky said several weeks ago that to be granted probation a person must agree to be searched without a warrant.

Hospital to hold health, safety fair

VAN NUYS - Valley Presbyterian Hospital is holding a one-stop health and safety fair, that includes free immunizations for children 4 to 14.

The fair is set for 9 a.m. to noon today at the hospital, 15107 Vanowen St.

In addition to the immunization immunization: see immunity; vaccination.  clinic, the hospital will hold lectures on nutrition, infection control and asthma prevention and management, and will offer free screenings on blood pressure, hearing, vision, and height and weight measurements.
