BRIEFLY COMPANY RECALLS PACKAGES OF CHEESE.

A California company recalled packages of Cotija cheese that might be contaminated with listeria bacteria, officials said Tuesday.

No illnesses have been reported from the products, Ariza Cheese Co. of Paramount said Tuesday.

The cheese was vacuum-packed in plastic and comes in different sizes. The packages indicate the product should be sold by April 21 to 25, 2004. Also recalled was cheese in foam trays with plastic cling wrap. It was labeled as Ariza Brand Queso Cotija and the package says the product should be sold by July 21 to 25, 2003.

Drug ties suspected in deadly shooting

PANORAMA CITY - A man was shot to death in Panorama City early Tuesday in what police are calling a possible drug-related incident.

The unidentified male victim was discovered at about 4:15 a.m. in the 14000 block of Parthenia Street, police said. It appeared that he had been shot at least once in the upper torso, and then collapsed on a sidewalk as he tried to cross the street, police said.

``It's probably narcotics related,'' said Lt. Joe Eddy of the Devonshire Division.

Witnesses reported to detectives that they saw a white van in the area about the time of the shooting, but police were unable to find that van.

Anyone with information is asked to call LAPD detectives at the Devonshire division, (818) 756-8291.

Cabriales named to school board

MOORPARK - The Moorpark Unified School District board on Tuesday unanimously appointed former trustee Gary Cabriales to a seat vacated by Chris Evans, who resigned this month after pleading no contest to grand theft.

Newly appointed Cabriales, an airline pilot who sat on the board for nearly 10 years before leaving in 2002, is viewed by many on the board as a noncontroversial leader with longtime ties in the community.

The appointment lasts until November 2004, when a regularly scheduled election is scheduled.

Several residents protested the decision, calling on the board to appoint Gary Lowenberg, who lost a position on the board in a close race with Evans last year.
