Judge: Don't cut out hospital beds

A federal judge said Tuesday she will extend an order barring Los Angeles County from eliminating 100 beds at County-USC Medical Center to help solve a looming budget crisis.

3 hurt when auto enters crosswalk

VAN NUYS - A vehicle struck an 11-year-old boy and two adults in Van Nuys on Tuesday, a fire department official said.

L.A. limits what can cover landfill

Man, 19, dies in freeway crash

THOUSAND OAKS - A 19-year-old Thousand Oaks man died late Monday when the car in which he was a passenger veered out of control and off the Route 23 Freeway, officials said.

The 11 p.m. crash that killed Rafael Vasquez-Villalba occurred near Janss Road.

17 die in holiday crashes in county

Seventeen people died in Memorial Day weekend crashes in Los Angeles County, compared with one last year and six in 2001, the California Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.

The Memorial Day enforcement period ran from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday.

Two people died during the comparable holiday period in 2000 and four in 1999, CHP Officer Wendy Moore said.

``This year, we had a very unusual number of fatalities, unfortunately,'' Moore said. She did not know why the number was so much higher this year.

Students will vie in solar boat races

RIVERSIDE - Student teams from Moorpark High School Moorpark High School, located in Moorpark, California, is a public high school in the Moorpark Unified School District and currently has an enrollment of 2,478 students.[1]  and Newbury Park Adventist Academy in Ventura County will compete against six other Southern California high schools in the Solar Splash, racing solar-powered boats built from scratch.

The competition is sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District, and includes sprints and 90-minute endurance races. The three-day competition begins Friday at Lake Skinner Recreation Area in Riverside County.
