In 1997, the Corolla became the bestselling car in the world, with over 30 million sold as of 2007.  westbound on Via Princessa approaching Vista Del Canon when he swerved to avoid several boxes in the roadway, sheriff's deputies said.

 lanes and collided with Brandon Gartner, 27, of Canyon Country, who was riding his 2003 Honda 600 RR motorcycle, deputies said.

The force of the impact knocked Gartner from his vehicle, and he was critically injured, officials said.

He was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital for treatment. Gallardo had minor injuries from his air bag deploying.

Deputies responding at the scene noticed both significant winds and several empty boxes that might have blown into the area. The eastbound lanes of Via Princessa were closed for approximately three hours while the collision was investigated.
