The 2001 regular season was supposed to end Dec. 1 with six major college games - the SEC and Big 12 title games and four others, including Army-Navy. All that changed after the 58 Division I-A games scheduled last weekend were called off in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the East Coast. The SEC title game still will be played at the Georgia Dome, with the starting time to be determined. --Florida State defensive end Eric Powell was in stable condition after being shot in the lower back Sunday. The 6-foot-4, 270-pound senior, an apparent victim of a robbery attempt, remained in the intensive care unit at the Orlando Regional Medical Center The Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) is the only level I trauma center in the Central Florida area and, therefore, provides intensive care for this area. ORMC is part of a group of hospitals known as Orlando Regional Healthcare, and itself is home to three other . MOTOR SPORTS: Doctors performed a follow-up operation on Alex Zanardi, saying the two-time CART champion was not out of danger after losing his legs in a crash. Doctors are reducing fluids and drugs to take Zanardi out of an ``induced coma.'' How quickly he's brought back to consciousness and taken off a ventilator depends on his response. TENNIS: A tournament's surface will determine which of three types of balls are used under a new International Tennis Federation rule prompted by powerful serves. The idea is to make uniform the speed of the game on all three surfaces. BOXING: Boxer Tony Ayala Jr. pleaded guilty to burglary in a deal that calls for 90 days in jail and 10 years' probation. The former junior middleweight contender also pleaded guilty to trying to commit aggravated assault, abruptly ending his weeklong trial in San Antonio. Formal sentencing was set for Oct. 8. The 38-year-old Ayala, who spent 16 years behind bars for raping a neighbor in Paterson, N.J., in 1983, had faced life in prison on the latest charges, filed when accused of breaking into a San Antonio home in December with intent to rape. He was shot by one of two women in the home. --The World Wrestling Championships, scheduled for Sept. 29 at Madison Square Garden Current arenas in the National Hockey League Western Conference Eastern Conference in New York, have been postponed. That means the Felix Trinidad-Bernanrd Hopkins card, originally scheduled for Sept. 15, could take place that night. No announcement has been made.
