VENTURA - The California Coastal Commission The California Coastal Commission is a state agency in the U.S. state of California with quasi-judicial regulatory influence over land use and public access in the California coastal zone.  said plans to demolish Matilija Dam near Ojai meet state coastal protection requirements.

Tearing down the 168-foot-high, obsolete dam will restore steelhead See RRAS.  trout by allowing them to swim upstream and spawn, and sand will flow downstream to restore eroded beaches.

The $130 million project will be the nation's largest dam removal effort. Environmental studies, U.S. Senate support and the president's signature are still needed before removal can begin.

$750,000 to help fund park project

Plans to turn the Sheldon-Arleta Landfill into a park got a boost with a $750,000 grant to upgrade the landfill gas recovery system, Councilman Tony Cardenas Tony Cardenas served in the California State Assembly. In the Assembly, he had the powerful position of chair of the Budget Committee. He is now a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 6th district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley.  announced this week.

The grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board will be used to install a new flare to burn off excess gas and to bury gas collection pipes that are now above ground. The grant will help cover the estimated $3 million cost of the new gas system.

The gas system project will take up to a year. It's the first step in a $10 million plan to build a sports park with fields, trails and a playground.
