BRIEFLY CIVIL WAR BATTLE REENACTMENT SET.

PALMDALE - Civil War buffs in authentic uniforms and gear will conduct mock battles and talk about life in the 1860s at a reenactment Saturday at Pelona Vista Park, on Tierra Subida Avenue south of Avenue R.

The reenactment was organized by Quartz Hill High School senior Sean Kaplar, a reenactor himself for three years at Fort Tejon State Historic Park. Kaplar organized the event as part of his senior project required for graduation.

Mock battles are scheduled at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The public is encouraged to attend and watch. Reenactment actors will be able to answer questions regarding the Civil War between battles, starting about 9 a.m.

There is no admission fee.

Youth Olympics track meet set

LANCASTER - Junior high students will exhibit their athletic prowess Saturday at the 56th annual Invitational Youth Olympics Track Meet hosted by the Lancaster Elks Lodge 1625.

The event begins at 9 a.m. at the Palmdale High School Athletic Field on 20th Street East, north of Avenue R. Gates open at 7:30 a.m. The meet is being held to commemorate Elks National Youth Week, May 2 to 8.

Charter school problems aired

PALMDALE - Palmdale School District trustees took testimony from more than 20 people both for and against renewing Guidance Charter School's lease to use classrooms at Manzanita Elementary School.

Parents and staff from both Manzanita and Guidance complained students from the other school bullied, lacked supervision and were discriminated against by the other school. The board will decide whether to renew the lease at its May 18 meeting.

Guidance Charter School, with grades kindergarten through eighth grade, started classes last fall at Manzanita after spending its first two years at a Palmdale Boulevard mosque.

It was the first instance of a charter school using a 2000 state law to get space on an Antelope Valley public school campus. The Palmdale School District is providing space to the charter school under Proposition 39, which California voters passed in November 2000 to let school districts pass bond measures with 55 percent of the vote, rather than two-thirds.

The proposition requires school districts to provide permanent and furnished facilities for charter schools that have average daily attendance of 80 or more students.
