Zine wants group effort vs. blight

Councilman Dennis Zine called Tuesday for new community efforts to combat graffiti and illegally posted signs.

``I want to bring in people who are concerned about this in a group called People Organizing Safe and Secure Environments,'' Zine said.

Members of the group will patrol their neighborhoods and report any problems to officials to try to correct problems and take down illegal signs, Zine said.

A new effort to increase the size of the Los Angeles Board of Education was proposed on Tuesday, with a city official saying a seven-member board is inadequate to deal with a district of more than 635,000 students.

Council to review budget forecasts

WESTLAKE VILLAGE - The City Council today will review preliminary budget projections for the next two fiscal years that include a $10.2 million proposed spending plan for 2002-03 and $7.4 million for 2003-04.

Although the city's financial health is good, staff recommends the council look at diversifying its revenue source because of the fiscal woes up in Sacramento and the city's heavy reliance on sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government. .

Seminars to help with property tax

GLENDALE - Los Angeles County will hold two free seminars to help local property owners who feel their taxes should be lowered due to a decline in the value of their buildings.

The seminars are scheduled for 10 a.m. May 28 and June 4 at the Glendale Central Library, 222 East Harvard St.

Fund-raiser to aid uninsured minors

GLENDALE - The Glendale Healthy Kids Organization, which assists children of uninsured families, will host a A Taste of Downtown Glendale fund-raiser 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. tonight.

For $20 per person, ticket holders can stroll to 20 downtown eateries to sample a variety of food.
