BRIEFLY CITY PANEL URGES HIKE IN FUNDING.


A city panel on Wednesday recommended adding $1.3 million to cover costs for the city's bomb squad and hazard materials team as a result of increased calls since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Officials with the police and fire departments said the materials were needed to make sure they can respond to the increased numbers of calls since the attacks.

Facility workers hold off on strike

WOODLAND HILLS - A planned strike by some 450 workers at the Motion Picture & Television Fund facilities scheduled to begin today has been postponed for 10 days to allow labor contract negotiators more time to reach an agreement, union officials said Wednesday.

Members of the Service Employees International Union Local 399 include nurses, health care workers, food servers, and maintenance staff at facilities that serve mostly retired people from the entertainment industry.

Affected facilities include the Motion Picture & Television Hospital, the Frances Goldwyn Lodge, the Motion Picture & Television Country House and others around Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

The federal Bureau of Land Management, which controls the mineral rights to the land, already has approved plans for the mine. Because of that, county officials say, they can only impose reasonable measures to protect the environment.

County lawyers believe that a measure that would make the mine unprofitable would be deemed unreasonable, said Rick Weiss, a deputy county counsel.

The council's Budget and Finance Committee, in a 4-1 vote, recommended that the full City Council allow him to hire Ann D'Amato on a $125,000 contract through next June. D'Amato and Delgadillo had worked together in the office of former Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002. .

City Administrative Officer Bill Fujioka had recommended against the contract, saying he did not believe D'Amato was serving as an independent contractor A person who contracts to do work for another person according to his or her own processes and methods; the contractor is not subject to another's control except for what is specified in a mutually binding agreement for a specific job. . Councilwoman Janice Hahn Janice Hahn is a member of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 15th district. Hahn was elected in 2001 and reelected in 2005, running unopposed. The 15th District encompasses the Los Angeles communities of Watts, Wilmington, Harbor Gateway, Harbor City, Athens on the  had opposed the contract.

Man who had role in theft sentenced

A man who played a role in the theft of 55 Oscars last year was sentenced Wednesday to a year already served in jail for violating his probation by stealing pallets from a Fullerton company where he worked.

Former Roadway Express truck driver Lawrence Ledent admitted earlier this year that he violated his probation in the Oscar theft case as a result of the Orange County case, for which he was sentenced last December to a year in county jail.
