The Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  on Tuesday endorsed a staff report that recommends discontinuation of Valley Cab Co.'s franchise to operate 96 taxis in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

The council plans to make a final decision on the issue next Nov. 28.

Valley Cab Co. officials filed a lawsuit against the city to try to keep their franchise. The court case is pending.

Manure protester faces 30 days jail

A protester who raised a stink during the Democratic National Convention by dumping four tons of horse manure in front of a hotel was sentenced Tuesday to 30 days in jail or 20 days on a work crew.

Drug-using mom to be sentenced

A woman whose methamphetamine use was brought to the attention of police by two of her daughters will be sentenced Dec. 6 for endangering her four children by using narcotics in their presence, officials said.

A San Fernando Superior Court jury convicted Karen Levy, 34, of Granada Hills late Monday of four counts of child endangering, two counts of child endangering likely to cause mental suffering and one count of possession of a controlled substance, the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office reported.

Tree firm owner enters guilty plea

The owner of Sherman Oaks Tree Service Inc. and a tax preparer for the company have each been charged with participating in a tax evasion scheme.

The owner of the tree service, 42-year-old Gregg Buskett, pleaded guilty to two counts of tax evasion and two counts of subscribing to a false statement in a tax return Nov. 13 and is scheduled for sentencing Feb. 26.
