Sentence delayed for killer mother

VENTURA - Formal sentencing for Socorro ``Cora'' Caro, the Pleasant Valley mother found guilty last November of murdering her three school-age sons, was delayed Wednesday until March 27.

Jurors had recommended the death penalty for Caro, but her attorneys filed a motion to have the judge overturn the finding for life in prison without the possibility of parole. An additional defense motion for a new trial motion for a new trial n. a request made by the loser for the case to be tried again on the basis that there were significant legal errors in the way the trial was conducted and/or the jury or the judge sitting without a jury obviously came to an incorrect result. , automatically filed in death penalty cases, was also held over to March 27.

Ventura County awarded $50,000

VENTURA - Ventura County got $50,000 from the state to come up with ways to keep Naval Base A naval base primarily for support of the forces afloat, contiguous to a port or anchorage, consisting of activities or facilities for which the Navy has operating responsibilities, together with interior lines of communications and the minimum surrounding area necessary for local  Ventura County open.

Ventura County got the grant, announced Wednesday by Gov. Gray Davis, through a defense retention grant program created by a 2000 state law.

The money will be used to gather data on issues like environmental problems and development encroachment that could affect Point Mugu and Port Hueneme Port Hueneme (wī'nē`mē), city (1990 pop. 20,319), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; founded 1870, inc. 1948. It has an artificial deep-sea harbor and is the site of a huge naval construction-battalion (Seabee) center. , and to market the bases' missions.

Officials seek aid in identifying body

VENTURA - Officials are asking the public's help in identifying the body of a homeless man found Monday at an encampment north of the Union Pacific Railroad Union Pacific Railroad, transportation company chartered (1862) by Congress to build part of the nation's first transcontinental railroad line. Under terms of the Pacific Railroads Act, the Union Pacific was authorized to build a line westward from Omaha, Nebr.  track, between the Ventura Freeway and Olivas Park Drive.

The Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office said the man died from natural causes, and had been dead for three days to a week.

He appeared to be 50 to 70 years old, 5 feet 10, 140 pounds, and had long, scraggly scrag·gly
