BRIEFLY CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING PLANNED.PALMDALE - The 19th annual Rancho Vista Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Cascades Restaurant, 3905 Club Rancho Drive. Santa will visit and there will be face painting and family entertainment by Marilyn Macaroni. The lighting will take place at 6 p.m. with Palmdale Mayor James Ledford and Santa. - Daily News Deadline nearing for story contest PALMDALE - Entries are being sought for the Palmdale Writers' Roundtable short story short story, brief prose fiction. The term covers a wide variety of narratives—from stories in which the main focus is on the course of events to studies of character, from the "short short" story to extended and complex narratives such as Thomas Mann's Death in Venice. Most often the short story is restricted in character and situation and is concerned with creating a single, dynamic effect. Its length usually falls between 2,000 and 10,000 words. contest. The submission deadline is Monday. Gift certificates to the Antelope Valley Mall will be given for first-, second- and third-place winners and each winner will receive a gift membership to the Writers' Roundtable program. Winners will be recognized at the Writers' Roundtable reception at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Palmdale Playhouse. Participants may submit as many stories as they wish. There is a $10 submission fee per story. Checks should be made payable to the City of Palmdale. Story submissions must be double-spaced and typed on plain white 8 1/2 by 11-inch paper using 12-point type. Stories should be no more than 3,000 words or approximately 12 pages. Originals will not be returned. All copyrights remain with the author. For more information, call (661) 267-5684. - Daily News Annual poker run to help raise funds LANCASTER - The fifth annual Aid To Oasis Poker Run and Barbecue will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at The Trap, 2822 E. Ave. I. Activities include a poker run, bike and car show, auction, entertainment, barbecue and door prizes. A meal of chicken, burgers, hot dogs, salads, and barbecue beans is $5 a plate. The event is being held to raise funds and collect donations for use by the Antelope Valley Oasis shelter, which takes in abused women and children. Items needed include toys, baby food, diapers, blankets, hygiene products, personal items for all ages, sundries, and monetary donations. The event is co-sponsored by Gypsee's Studios, 103 W.
