BRIEFLY CHP CRACKS DOWN ON DRUNK DRIVING.

SANTA CLARITA - In an effort to reduce drunk driving, the California Highway Patrol conducted a sobriety checkpoint Saturday and Sunday to remind motorists police are watching.

Police stopped nearly 300 vehicles between 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Sierra Highway and Fitch Avenue in Canyon Country. One person was arrested on a charge of drunk driving. No other citations were issued.

This was the fourth sobriety checkpoint the agency has conducted this year.

Hunters find car abandoned in woods

SANTA CLARITA - Two hunters in the area of Bear Campground in the Angeles National Forest found an abandoned Honda Civic with a hose leading from the exhaust pipe into an unoccupied tent, police said Sunday.

Officials have attributed the scene to a possible suicide attempt. Sean Bernard Kelly, 25, was reported missing last Sunday, but the search had not been fruitful until the hunters discovered the 1987 red Honda Civic yesterday.

``Search and rescue teams conducted an extensive search for the vehicle's missing persons, but no one was found,'' said Deputy Julia Honegger of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Department.

Anyone with information about Kelly's whereabouts are asked to contact the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff's station at (661) 255-1121.
