Wildfires, floods close Highway 18

Short sparks commercial blaze

PACOIMA - Fire investigators on Monday were sifting through the rubble of a single-story commercial building where the roof caught fire, officials said.

More than five dozen firefighters responded to the blaze in the 13600 block of Vaughn Street at 10:50 a.m., said Jim Wells of the city Fire Department. The fire was out within 30 minutes.

The Vaughan Street Partnership manufactured wrought-iron security fencing, and damage was estimated at $575,000. About $500,000 of the damage involved building contents, and the metal-clad, 100-by- 300-foot building sustained about $75,000 in damage, Wells said.

There were no injuries. The fire started from an electrical short in assembly line equipment where paint powder coating is applied.

Man sentenced in false memorabilia

A Studio City man prosecutors say sold $226,000 worth of counterfeit celebrity memorabilia to a collectibles dealer was sentenced Monday to six months behind bars and 10 months of home detention.

John R. Widener, 59, was sentenced in Los Angeles by U.S. District Judge Lourdes Baird, Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Hernandez said.

Widener pleaded guilty in February 2003 to three counts of mail fraud, court records show.

Two men arrested in rape of teen

PASADENA - Pasadena police took two men into custody Monday in connection with the rape of a 17-year-old girl, authorities said.

The girl was allegedly raped, her male companion pistol-whipped and the girl's car stolen Monday afternoon near the 500 block of Mar Vista Avenue, police said.
