BRIEFLY CAPRIATI EASES ON OVER HARKLEROAD.

Second-seeded Jennifer Capriati Jennifer Marie Capriati (born March 29, 1976, in New York City) is a former World No. 1 women's tennis player from the United States. She won three Grand Slam singles titles (2001 and 2002 Australian Open, 2001 French Open), and the women's singles gold medal at the 1992 Olympic  needed only 53 minutes to beat Ashley Harkleroad Ashley Harkleroad (born May 2, 1985), is an American tennis player. Born in Rossville, Georgia, Harkleroad reached a career-high ranking of No. 39 on June 9, 2003. As of October 16, 2007, she is ranked 92 in singles and 94 in doubles, as well as 83 in the Race to the Sony Ericsson  6-0, 6-3 in a second-round match Tuesday at the Acura Classic in Carlsbad.

Capriati used her powerful groundstrokes to overwhelm the unseeded Harkleroad.

--Pete Sampras beat Wayne Ferreira 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the Toronto Masters Series. Andy Roddick, the 12th seed, defeated Dominik Hrbaty 6-2, 6-4.

HOCKEY: The Kings agreed to terms with defenseman Mike Pudlick on a one-year contract. Pudlick, 24, had 15 points and 42 penalty minutes in 64 games last season with Kings minor-league affiliate in Manchester, N.H.

 is investigating possible rules violations involving three Fresno State athletic programs, including the men's basketball team formerly coached by Jerry Tarkanian.

The NCAA is examining whether a local Japanese restaurant fed basketball players for free and whether a sports agent provided benefits to a basketball player.

The NCAA also is looking into the women's basketball program and men's soccer program.

 recruit C.J. Niusulu has been arraigned on felony assault charges in his hometown of Barstow after allegedly punching a clerk at a drive-in theater. The clerk suffered a broken nose and had to have his jaw wired shut after the dispute July 17, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Dept. Sgt. Lon Jacobs.
