BRIEFLY CANCER TAKES LIFE OF THIRD RAMONE.


Johnny Ramone, guitarist and co-founder of the seminal punk band ``The Ramones,'' has died. He was 55.

Ramone died in his sleep Wednesday afternoon at his Los Angeles home surrounded by friends and family, his publicist said. He had been fighting a five-year battle with prostate cancer prostate cancer, cancer originating in the prostate gland. Prostate cancer is the leading malignancy in men in the United States and is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in men. .

Serial rapist gets lengthy sentence

LONG BEACH - A serial rapist who attacked more than a dozen women between 1997 and 2002 was sentenced Wednesday to 1,030 years in prison plus 10 life terms.

Mark Wayne Rathbun was convicted Aug. 10 of 25 counts of forcible rape, 14 counts of residential burglary and other charges ranging from assault to sexual assault.

Prosecutors said the 34-year-old drifter climbed into open windows and sneaked through unlocked doors to sexually assault women in the Belmont Shore section of Long Beach, as well as the nearby cities of Los Alamitos and Huntington Beach. He became known as the Belmont Shore rapist.

SANTA MONICA - Two guides designed to help people identify and survive various types of terrorist attacks are available on the Rand Web site, the Santa Monica-based think tank said Wednesday.

The guides include a single-sheet, foldable reference card and a program that can be downloaded onto a personal digital assistant device.
