``The Balcony Balcony (from Italian balcone, scaffold; cf. High German balcho, beam, balk; probably cognate with Persian term بالكانه bālkāneh or its older variant ,'' considered Genet's masterpiece, is a complicated and dark tale of power, sex, fantasy and purity taking place in a brothel, which stands as a metaphor for an emerging dictatorial political system.

Reality is constantly in question as the brothel's clients, dreaming of being dignitaries, are suddenly thrust into those roles.

Cat Cooper will direct the student cast during the performances, which will take place in CalArts' Ensemble Theater II, 24700 McBean Parkway, Valencia. Tickets are $7. Call (661) 253-7800 for reservations.

Junior high kids to show off talent

VALENCIA - Arroyo Seco Junior High School Arroyo Seco Junior High School is a public junior high school in Saugus, California. It is a member of the William S. Hart Union High School District. Rhondi Durand, Cathy Novean, and Dr. Andy Keyne are the principals.  students will showcase their talents at the annual talent show at 7 p.m. Thursday and Feb. 27, in Knutson Hall on campus at 27171 N. Vista Delgado Drive, Valencia.

This year's theme is ``Reality Bytes,'' and the show will be a takeoff on reality television shows. Tickets are $5. For information, call the school at (661) 296-0991.

Annual cabaret cabaret

Restaurant that serves liquor and offers light musical entertainment. The cabaret probably originated in France in the 1880s as a small club that presented amateur acts and satiric skits lampooning bourgeois conventions.

NEWHALL - The Canyon Theatre Guild's annual cabaret show will have a Latin American theme as the group presents ``Cabaret Copacabana'' at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 28.

Guests will enjoy a small buffet and no-host bar, followed by the cabaret show and dancing until dawn to a live band.

2004 Railfest will feature cabooses

FILLMORE - Fillmore & Western Railway company's annual Railfest is scheduled for March 20 and March 21 in Fillmore.

This year's theme is ``Cabooses on Parade,'' and the event will feature frontier gunfighters, food, crafts and rides on a vintage train. Passengers can choose regular passenger cars or ride in a caboose.

Seats are limited, so make reservations early by calling (800) 773-8724.
