BRIEFLY CALARTS PRESENTS SHAKESPEARE PLAY.


VALENCIA - Director Karin Coonrod will open her production of Shakespeare's dark comedy ``All's Well That Ends Well'' at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Walt Disney Modular Theater The Walt Disney Modular Theatre is an indoor performance space located at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. The play is presented by the CalArts School of Theater and will run through Nov. 21. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 11 to 14 and Nov. 19 to 21, and 4 p.m. on Nov. 15.

Coonrod, a guest artist at CalArts this year, describes ``All's Well That Ends Well'' as Shakespeare's most problematic of problem plays. The dark comedy charts the course of Helena's love for the unworthy Bertram and investigates the nature of honor amid the use and abuse of language.

Event showcases school composers

VALENCIA - SCREAM, the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Resource for Electronic-Acoustic Music, will host a ``Listening Room'' featuring performances of compositions written by and for faculty and staff of CalArts at 8 p.m. Friday.

The event, which will take place in the Roy O. Disney Roy Oliver Disney (June 24, 1893–December 20, 1971, aged 78) was, with his younger brother Walt Disney, co-founder of what is now The Walt Disney Company. Roy served as the company's chief executive officer (1929–1971)-though title name wasn't given until 1968-,  Music Hall on campus and is free of charge, will be preceded by a panel discussion at 7 p.m.

Composers featured at the event will include David Rosenboom David Rosenboom (born September 9, 1947 in Fairfield, Iowa) is an American composer and pioneer in the use of neurofeedback. Rosenboom has also worked with cross-cultural collaborations and compositional algorithms. , dean of CalArts' School of Music; Barry Schrader; James Tenney James Tenney (August 10, 1934 - August 24, 2006) was an American composer and influential music theorist.

Tenney was born in Silver City, New Mexico, and grew up in Arizona and Colorado.
; Anne LeBaron; Bob Clendenen; Michael Pisaro; and Peter Grenader. Following the concert, the composers will remain in the hall and take questions from the audience.

SCREAM, a consortium of colleges and universities in the Southern California area with programs in electro-acoustic music, has presented annual concerts since its founding by Schrader in 1986.

Marionettes co-star in Light Lab show

VALENCIA - Puppet theater artist and experimental filmmaker Susan Simpson will debut her newest work, ``Spit Shine Glisten,'' Nov. 12 at the Light Lab on the CalArts campus.

Curtain times for performances are 8 p.m. Nov. 12 to 15 and Nov. 18 to 22, with two matinees, at 1 p.m. on Nov. 15 and 4 p.m. on Nov. 22.

The performance will incorporate life-size wooden marionettes that interact with actors on stage. The puppets and accompanying projected images are used to create an effect of endless doubling.

As for the relationship of the puppets to the piece, Simpson said, ``In addition to their ability to embody uncanny duplicity DUPLICITY, pleading. Duplicity of pleading consists in multiplicity of distinct matter to one and the same thing, whereunto several answers are required. Duplicity may occur in one and the same pleading. , these puppets and their anti-gravitational qualities are perfectly equipped to convey the sense of physical transcendence in ecstatic religious ritual.''

Admission for all performances is $7 for adults and $2 for students and seniors, with one free performance at 8 p.m. on Nov. 11. Call (661) 253-7800 for tickets.
