Libbey Park oak will be cut down

OJAI - Another oak tree is getting the ax in Libbey Park.

Three arborists said the diseased tree is dying and could fall on those attending an upcoming music festival. It will come down this week, City Manager Andy Belknap said.

``It's a terrible thing to lose a tree,'' Belknap said. ``(But) I don't find it a difficult decision to make with the evidence we have.''

The tree's root structure is dead and the oak leans toward the grandstand.

Two months ago, the city cut down two oaks in Libbey Park, sparking a protest by preservationists. About 100 people chanted, carried signs and scrawled messages in chalk on the sidewalk to show support for the trees.
