Hundreds turn out for nurses march

Hundreds of registered nurses held a march Friday in Los Angeles before a public hearing on a new law requiring safe nurse-to-patient ratios, though conflicting opinions were offered on the law's effect.

The California Department of Health Services Department of Health Services may refer to:
  • Los Angeles County Department of Health Services

DHS Department of Health Services
DHS Demographic and Health Surveys
DHS Dirhams (Morocco national currency)
to set minimum staffing levels for hospital RNs.

Carrying signs declaring ``Safe staffing saves lives,'' many nurses represented by the Service Employees International Union urged DHS to set higher standards than have been proposed.

The union has recommended a ratio of one registered nurse for every four patients in medical-surgical hospital units, while the DHS has proposed a 1-to-6 ratio, which many RNs said will spread them too thin.

Also, the DHS proposal sets one nurse for four pediatric patients, while the union suggests one for every three patients; and the DHS proposes six psychiatry patients for each nurse, and the union recommends anywhere from two to five patients per nurse.
