The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is the five member governing board of Los Angeles County, California. Members of the board of supervisors are elected by district, the current members as of April 2006 are:
  • District 1: Gloria Molina, Democrat
 voted Tuesday to send a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and  urging the agency to lead a cleanup effort of chromium 6 contamination in Burbank, Glendale and Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

The supervisors also voted to send a letter to the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board to issue cleanup and abatement orders.

A recent study, conducted by court-appointed water master Mel Belvins, revealed that ground water contaminated contaminated,
v 1. made radioactive by the addition of small quantities of radioactive material.
2. made contaminated by adding infective or radiographic materials.
3. an infective surface or object.
 with chromium 6 had migrated near wells and water-treatment facilities that service Burbank, Glendale and Los Angeles.

The report called for federal intervention to order the 60 companies suspected of ground water contamination to add chromium 6 to the list of pollutants the companies are currently required to remove from water supplies.

The board approved the project last year, but its future was in jeopardy because state funding earmarked for it was not forthcoming.

The state is facing a budget shortfall of nearly $35 billion, according to the governor.

After delaying a decision on the project, the California Transportation Commission late last week approved $9.5 million in funding.

Board to improve tax bill notices

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, responding to a case in which an 85-year-old man lost his condominium over a $546 tax bill, voted Tuesday to improve methods of notifying property owners about delinquencies.

The county will start sending out notices of past-due property taxes each year and printing past-due amounts in boldface on bills with a color background.

Social workers to help homeless

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to have social workers accompany police on ``sweeps'' of Skid Row.

Teams from the Department of Mental Health and the Alcohol and Drug Program Administration will join officers during operations aimed at clearing the sidewalks on the east side of downtown.

County Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke proposed the idea to ``facilitate matters so that homeless people, especially those who are mentally ill or who have a substance abuse problem, aren't going to simply be routed into jail, as opposed to being taken somewhere else where they could be treated,'' said aide Glenda Wina.

Judge orders feds to protect fish

A judge in San Francisco ruled Tuesday that a federal wildlife agency must protect the waterways where the Santa Ana sucker The Santa Ana sucker, Catostomus santaanae, is a sucker found only in a handful of rivers in southern California.

Firetruck collides with ambulance

A Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is the agency that provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Los Angeles.  ambulance and fire engine responding to a reported emergency collided at a busy midcity intersection Tuesday, resulting in minor injuries, a city fire official said.

The crash at Venice Boulevard and South Western Avenue was reported at 4:32 p.m., said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The ambulance was going north on Western, and the ``engine company'' was moving east on Venice when they collided, he said.
