County workers join L.A. protest

Numerous Los Angeles County employees took time off from work Tuesday to join a protest at the Hall of Administration against a contract offer that they say could be a backward step in compensation.

Contracts with several unions for the county's employees are in negotiation this year and thousands of employees are working under expired contracts. County officials say they are offering as much as they can, given that the state's budget troubles are restricting local available dollars.

Man pleads guilty in family's deaths

A 27-year-old man pleaded guilty Tuesday to four counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of a family of four who perished in a fire last year at a Hollywood Hills home.

Carlos Amador agreed to cooperate with investigators and to testify against others charged in the case in exchange for four 15-year-to-life terms, which will run at the same time. He is set to be sentenced April 28.

Building, safety director to speak

NORTHRIDGE - Andrew Adelman, director of the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety, will speak on zoning laws and building codes Nov. 12 at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. Adelman is the keynote speaker for the second session of the 2003 Real Estate Lecture Series, presented by CSUN's Center for Real Estate and the Los Angeles Chapter of Lambda Alpha International, the honorary land economics society.
