BRIEFLY BOARD MAY HOLD COLLEGE BOND VOTE.


The Los Angeles Community College District The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the community college district serving Los Angeles, California and some of its neighboring cities. See Board of directors.  is considering placing a $1 billion bond on the May ballot, officials said Thursday.

Trustees voted Wednesday to allow Chancellor Mark Drummond to develop several proposals that he hopes to present at the board's Jan. 8 meeting.

Depending on which option the board chooses, the bond issue could run between $500 million and more than $1 billion and would be used to finance new construction and modernization projects in the nine-campus system, Drummond said.

If approved by the board, the bond would enhance Proposition A, the six-year, $1.2 billion bond measure city voters approved last year to upgrade Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  city community colleges.

City official offers free sand, bags

Suspect may be tied to burglaries

GLENDALE - Police have arrested a man they suspect of breaking into three south Glendale houses Wednesday night while the residents were home.

The suspect, Sergio Sandoval, 38, of Glendale, also is linked to similar burglaries reported over the last few months, police said.

``He's entering with the intent of doing something,'' said Glendale police spokeswoman Leticha Chang.

Nothing was reported stolen, and Sandoval has not been charged with anything other than burglary, Chang said. ``I've seen reports similar to this for months - whether or not it's the same guy, the investigators are working on that,'' Chang said.

$8 million down to keep open space

GLENDALE - The city of Glendale closed escrow Thursday on the $25.5 million Oakmont View V property purchase, which was announced by the City Council last week.

The city has made a down payment of $3 million, and the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority has paid $5 million to developer Gregg's Artistic Homes for the 244 acres of open space in the Verdugo Mountains The Verdugo Mountains are a small mountain range located just south of the western San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County, Southern California, The United States of America (USA). The range is commonly known simply as the Verdugos.  north of Glendale.

The final payment will be made March 21.

``This is an exciting day for the city ... the property will forever remain open space,'' said Mayor Rafi Manoukian Rafi Manoukian is a former member of the city council in Glendale, California. Glendale grant to benefit homeless

GLENDALE - The city of Glendale received a $1.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for homeless programs.

Glendale applied for the grant in June. It is the biggest HUD Hud (hd), a pre-Qur'anic prophet of Islam. Hud unsuccessfully exhorted his South Arabian people, the Ad, to worship the One God.  grant the city has ever received, according to city spokesman Ritch Wells.

The money will be split among 12 programs, ranging from homeless shelters for people recovering from drug or alcohol addiction to a homeless employment program.

Glendale schools fund renovations

GLENDALE - The Glendale Unified School District The Glendale Unified School District is a school district based in Glendale, California, United States.

The school district serves the city of Glendale, portions of the city of La CaƱada and the unincorporated communities of Montrose and La Crescenta.
 allocated $23 million Tuesday for renovations to Toll Elementary and Keppel Middle schools, two of Glendale's oldest schools.

The projects will be paid for out-of-state bond money set aside for building and renovation.

Construction will begin immediately, and portable classrooms will be used for displaced classes.

Neither school has been renovated since the 1950s. They will be undergoing seismic retrofitting along with other major renovations.
