BRIEFLY AUDIT: PRISON FILM FUNDS MISHANDLED.


A state audit released Wednesday found state prison employees in Los Angeles County mismanaged $3,300 collected from television and motion picture production companies that filmed at the prison.

The money was supposed to be collected for costs prison staff incurred when providing security for film production activities.

Literacy program lauded nationally

An innovative program launched by the city to improve literacy among Los Angeles residents has been honored by a national organization.

The L.A. Workforce Literacy Project developed by Mayor James Hahn was presented with an award by the National Alliance of Urban Literacy Coalitions for its commitment to improving literacy and bringing together more than 80 organizations.

The program was developed last year after studies showed fully 53 percent of the city work force was undereducated.
