BRIEFLY APARTMENT EXPLODES AS BUG BOMBS IGNITE.

Byline: Orith Goldberg Staff Writer

NORTHRIDGE - Six bug bombs used in a vacant apartment building caused a thunderous explosion that took out all of the windows in the apartment, officials said Tuesday.

Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is the agency that provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Los Angeles. , said the explosion, reported about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 18400 block of Prairie Street, sent debris flying 30 feet from the apartment.

It appeared to be ignited by a pilot light in the apartment, Humphrey said.

``There's a reason they call them bug bombs . . . they are,'' Humphrey said.

Thankfully no one was inside the apartment during the explosion, he said.

The apartment manager had gone into the vacant second-story apartment and used the six bug bombs at once, not following instructions that stated that pilot lights and other sources of ignition should be turned off, officials said.
