BRIEFLY AMERICAN HISTORY CONTESTS OPENED.


The Alliklik chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a Colonial patriotic society in the United States, open to women having one or more ancestors who aided the cause of the Revolution. The society was organized (1890) at Washington, D.C.  is the local sponsor for three American history contests.

Students in grades five through eight can write an essay on the following topic: ``As editor of the Philadelphia Gazette, interview at least two signers of the Declaration of Independence and write an article for the July 5, 1776, edition.''

The deadline to enter is Dec. 10.

Students in grades nine through 12 can write an essay on this topic: ``If you were to interview Christopher Columbus and John Glenn, what differences and similarities would you expect between them?'' The deadline to enter is Dec. 15.

Students in grades one through 12, including those in special-education classes, can enter the Junior American Citizen contests with the topic, ``America - Born on the Fourth of July'' in the areas of art, written expression or community service. One can enter as an individual, as part of a group of five or more, and in different categories. The entries will be judged with others in the same grade level or in special education. The deadline to enter is Jan. 12.

Alliance selected to handle program

The Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  School & Business Alliance has been chosen as the local entity to manage a scholarship program sponsored by the Southland south·land or South·land

This pilot program was established to promote education excellence and volunteerism, and to strengthen partnerships with local schools.

A $750 scholarship will be awarded to a recent graduate of the William S. Hart Union High School District now enrolled at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. . To be considered, applicants must submit copies of their high school transcripts and proof of current enrollment at College of the Canyons.
