BRIEFLY AMBULANCE GETS TWO PARAMEDICS.


An ambulance stationed in the Santa Clara Valley will soon be staffed with two paramedics in response to the closing of Santa Paula Memorial Hospital.

The ambulance, which previously carried a paramedic and an emergency medical technician

A person trained and certified to appraise and initiate the administration of emergency care for victims of trauma or acute illness before or during transportation of victims to a health care facility.
, will be upgraded starting Monday, said Mark Norman, a spokesman for American Medical Response.

Paramedics have been taking between 25 and 30 patients per week from the Santa Clara Valley to hospitals in Ventura and Los Angeles County since Santa Paula Memorial shut its doors Dec. 19, Norman said.

District to flush street hydrants

The Ventura County Waterworks District will perform an annual system flush in the Moorpark area for about two weeks starting Monday.

Workers will open fire hydrants and run water in the streets between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. during the flushing operation.

Residents may notice a slight discoloration in their tap water during this period, but water quality will not be affected, district officials said.

Volunteers are sought for Habitat

Habitat for Humanity of Ventura County is seeking volunteers to help create housing for low-income families.

Volunteers are needed for construction crews, fund raising, land acquisition and other services.

Volunteer orientations will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. March 13 at the organization's Oxnard headquarters.

People sought for local grand jury

The Ventura Superior Court is seeking nominations for the 2004-05 grand jury.

Applicants must be United States citizens 18 or older, a county resident for at least one year, and never have been convicted of a felony or malfeasance in office.

Grand jury service is a one-year commitment beginning July 1, and requires 32 to 40 hours per week.

The grand jury investigates county and city governments, participates in fiscal and management audits, and prepares reports.

Hunter to head government panel

Moorpark Mayor Patrick Hunter has been elected to serve a one-year term as chairman-elect of the Ventura Council of Governments, authority of Ventura County and its 10 cities.

Hunter will assume responsibility as chairman in January 2005.

Each agency is represented on the board by an elected official, which addresses issues of regional interest and attempt to find solutions to common concerns.

CLU scholarships open until April 2

Applications for scholarships to California Lutheran University are being accepted through April 2 at the Women's Resource Center on campus.

To be eligible for a scholarship, the applicant must be a re-entry woman student over 25 years old and accepted as a CLU undergraduate or fifth-year teaching credential student for fall 2004. Interested students must also have a grade-point average of at least 3.0 and have a need for financial assistance to attend college.

The scholarships are funded by proceeds of Creative Options: A Day for Women, taking place at CLU on Saturday.
