BRIEFLY ALIENS SMUGGLER SENTENCED TO LIFE.


A Mexican national who was living in Northridge was sentenced Monday to life in federal prison for running a smuggling smuggling, illegal transport across state or national boundaries of goods or persons liable to customs or to prohibition. Smuggling has been carried on in nearly all nations and has occasionally been adopted as an instrument of national policy, as by Great Britain  operation that brought illegal aliens into the country and physically abused them if smuggling fees were not paid, officials said.

Minivan hits, kills pedestrian, 88

WESTLAKE VILLAGE- An 88-year-old Westlake Village resident attempting to cross Townsgate Road midblock died Monday after he was struck by a minivan, police said.

The man who police did not identify until relatives could be notified, died after the 7:42 p.m. crash on Townsgate Road just west of Village Glen Drive, sadi Ventura County Sgt. Complex to bear Braude's name

VAN NUYS - A $34 million city constituent service center scheduled to open in Van Nuys in 2003 will bear the name of former City Councilman Marvin Braude Marvin Braude (August 11, 1920—December 7, 2005)served as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 11th district from 1965 to 1997. At various times Mr. Braude (pronounced BROW-dee) served as chair of the Finance and Revenue Committee, the Environmental Quality and Waste .

Valley woman killed in crash

An elderly Oregon man and a Northridge woman died after their open-top Jeep ran off a logging road, went over a steep embankment and rolled over several times.

Richard Lewis Tripp, 76, of Wimer, Ore., and Lois Jean Vesterby of Northridge, set out on a drive in their 1947 Willys Jeep to take in some local scenery Friday evening.

Investigators said it appeared the open-top Jeep was traveling up a steep grade when it went off the roadway, rolled several times and hit a group of trees.
