Horses escape injury in crash

CALABASAS - A truck and trailer carrying two horses overturned Sunday on the Ventura Freeway near Calabasas, but apparently there were no injuries.

The crash, reported just after 1 p.m., occurred near Mureau Road, said California Highway Patrol Officer J. Seumanutafa.

The horses were shaken up but otherwise uninjured, according to a broadcast report.

Authorities closed the westbound lanes in the area after the crash and at least one lane was expected to remain closed for several hours, said Seumanutafa.

Mahony to open 'people's church'

Cardinal Roger Mahony will dedicate the new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels today, capping a six-year, $197 million quest to bring a new Catholic church to downtown Los Angeles.

The massive cathedral, on the corner of Temple and Grand streets in the heart of downtown's Civic Center, will be blessed in a three-hour ceremony, after which it will begin its new life as what Mahony calls the ``people's church.''

The doors to the plaza will open at 8:30 a.m. and the dedication rites will begin at 9:50 a.m.
