BRIEFLY 9-11 MEMORIAL SERVICE PLANNED.CANOGA PARK - A candlelight service in memory of the victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks is planned for Sept. 11, at the Madrid Theatre in Canoga Park. West Valley Christian Church is sponsoring the event, which will include inspirational music, a multimedia presentation and a message of hope. The vigil is set for 7 to 8 p.m. at the theater, 21622 Sherman Way. The lobby opens at 6 p.m., and doors open at 6:30 p.m. Children are welcome. For more information, call (818) 884-6480 or check online at www.wvcch.org. - Daily News Horses escape injury in crash CALABASAS - A truck and trailer carrying two horses overturned Sunday on the Ventura Freeway near Calabasas, but apparently there were no injuries. The crash, reported just after 1 p.m., occurred near Mureau Road, said California Highway Patrol Officer J. Seumanutafa. The horses were shaken up but otherwise uninjured, according to a broadcast report. Authorities closed the westbound lanes in the area after the crash and at least one lane was expected to remain closed for several hours, said Seumanutafa. - City News Service Mahony to open 'people's church' Cardinal Roger Mahony will dedicate the new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels today, capping a six-year, $197 million quest to bring a new Catholic church to downtown Los Angeles. The massive cathedral, on the corner of Temple and Grand streets in the heart of downtown's Civic Center, will be blessed in a three-hour ceremony, after which it will begin its new life as what Mahony calls the ``people's church.''
