GLENDALE - A 76-year-old Glendale man has died from being shot in the chest Aug. 5 as he walked past a group of young men involved in a fight, police said Tuesday.

Armenak Nercissian was shot about 6 p.m. that Sunday as he walked near Adams Street and Elk Avenue. One in the fighting group pulled out a gun and fired a round that struck Nercissian, police said.

Hotel pool guard slugged on head

GLENDALE - A security guard for the Glendale Hilton Hotel was assaulted early Tuesday by four youths who jumped a fence to swim in the hotel pool, police said.

Hearing delayed in hospital deaths

A preliminary hearing for a former respiratory therapist accused of murdering six elderly patients was continued from Tuesday until Oct. 17.

Scholarship fund to honor teacher

GLENDALE - A scholarship fund has been established at Glendale Community College Glendale Community College can refer to one of two colleges in the United States.
  • Glendale Community College (Arizona)
  • Glendale Community College (California)
 in memory of Professor Mark A. Doyle, who died in July.

The decorated World War II veteran taught courses in anthropology, sociology and gerontology gerontology: see geriatrics.  at the college for 33 years.

Doyle was also active in the community, serving on various commissions and boards dedicated to improving the city.

The scholarship will reward an outstanding Glendale Community College graduate with a record of service to the nation or community.

Fund-raiser set for parade float

GLENDALE - The second annual Dreaming of Roses, Glendale's major fund-raiser for its entry in the Tournament of Roses, is scheduled for Sept. 9.
