BRIEFLY 7 KILLED WHEN VAN COLLIDES WITH TRAIN.


Seven people were killed when a minivan collided with an Amtrak Amtrak, the National Railroad Passenger Corp., authorized to operate virtually all intercity passenger railroad routes in the United States. Amtrak was created by Congress in 1970 in response to more than two decades of continuous operating deficits by privately run  train Wednesday near Bakersfield, authorities said.

Judge won't block vote on term limit

A Superior Court judge on Wednesday denied Sheriff Lee Baca's request to kill a March ballot measure that would create term limits for elected county officers.

The ballot measure, which would limit the terms of the Board of Supervisors, sheriff, district attorney and assessor to three four-year stints, was approved by the supervisors in September, over the objections of Baca.

Baca's attorney said an appeal is in the works.

Applicants sought for parking panel

BURBANK - The city is seeking applicants for the Downtown Parking Management Committee.

The committee works with staff from the public works, community development and police departments to provide recommendations for parking management.

The preferred makeup of the committee is as follows: one Transportation Commissioner, one Planning Board member, one representative from the Downtown Stakeholders' Association, one representative from the Media City Center Mall and one business representative from each of the eight blocks bounded by Angeleno Avenue, First Street, Magnolia Boulevard and Third Street.

Interested persons may pick up applications at the City Clerk's Office at City Hall, 275 East Olive Ave. The deadline to apply is Jan. 29.

Contest promotes historic missions

WOODLAND HILLS - A Southland company is co-sponsoring a statewide poster competition for fourth-graders to increase awareness of the critical preservation needs of California's 21 historic missions.

The nonprofit California Missions Foundation joined forces with Woodland Hills-based 21st Century Insurance Co. to sponsor the ``A Day in the Life of a Mission'' contest.

Open to all California fourth-grade students in public and private schools who study the missions as part of their ``California: A Changing State'' studies, the deadline for entries is April 12.
