PALMDALE - Sheriff's deputies were looking for four young men who shot at a car traveling in front of Manzanita School on Monday afternoon.

No one was injured, but school officials kept pupils inside their classrooms as a precaution.

Investigators said four men in a blue car had argued with a group of men in a silver car in front of Palmdale High School. The silver car sped away with the blue car following.

When the cars reached the vicinity of Manzanita School, about 2 1/2 miles away, the occupants of the blue car opened fire, spraying the silver car with bullets, deputies said.

Killer apologizes before sentencing

LANCASTER - A 24-year-old Michigan man convicted in the fatal shooting of his cousin's 19-year-old friend apologized to the victim's family before being sentenced to 40 years to life in prison.

Tremaine Burt, who maintained that he acted in self-defense, was convicted in March of second-degree murder for the March 26, 2000, fatal shooting of Timothy Jackson-Orange, who at the time of his death was attending Antelope Valley College studying to be an electrical engineer.

Burt walked up to the victim, who was sitting on a couch in the cousin's apartment in the 2300 block of West Avenue J-8, and told him, ``Don't be disrespecting my cousin, Blood,'' prosecutors said. Jackson-Orange said he didn't know what Burt was talking about, prosecutors said. Burt then said, ``I'll show you,'' pulled out a gun and shot Jackson-Orange, prosecutors said.

Elks to host sports event for children

LANCASTER - About 800 boys and girls in sixth through eighth grades are expected to participate May 12 in the 53rd annual Invitational Junior Youth Olympics Track Meet, sponsored by BPO Elks Lodge 1625.

The free event, which will start at 9 a.m. May 12 at Quartz Hill High School, will include foot races, long- and high-jump competitions and the shot put.
