BRIEFLY 3 STILL IN HOSPITAL AFTER DEADLY CRASH.


VAN NUYS - Two adults who had been in a school minivan remained in critical condition Friday following a traffic crash with an SUV that left one unidentified adult student dead, authorities said.

The woman driver of the SUV, who was not identified, also remained hospitalized with serious injuries following the late Thursday morning crash in the 6800 block of Woodley Avenue, said Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Police Detective Bill Bustos of the Valley Traffic Division.

Woman convicted of killing toddler

A North Hollywood woman was convicted Friday of the August 2001 beating death of her live-in boyfriend's 3 1/2-year-old daughter.

The Los Angeles Superior Court jury deliberated less than a day before convicting Jenara Valle, 33, of assault on a child under 8 leading to the death of Maria Mejia.

 and Associates to search for the next police chief, city Personnel Director Margaret Whelan said Friday.

Officials expect the contract with the firm to be completed by next week.

The Personnel Department will distribute about 20,000 surveys to residents, asking about the characteristics desirable in the next police chief. Chief Bernard C. Parks Bernard Parks (born December 7, 1943 in Beaumont, Texas) is a member of the Los Angeles City Council, representing the 8th District in South Los Angeles and former Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Parks attended Los Angeles City College, received his B.S.
 retired May 4 after the Police Commission declined to offer him a second five-year term.

Suspect arrested in taping of girls

A Westlake Village businessman police suspect of secretly following and videotaping young girls was arrested on suspicion of lewd conduct inside a Burbank bookstore, authorities said Friday.

Burbank and Thousand Oaks police officials conducted a joint investigation of Michael Patrick prior to his Wednesday arrest on suspicion of felony child annoyance. He was being held in the Burbank Police jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.

Teachers close to new wage pacts

Teachers in Conejo Valley and Oak Park are moving toward new contracts.
