Gov. Gray Davis announced on Friday the appointments of lawyer Vincent Okamoto, Deputy District Attorney Charles Q. Clay III and Assistant City Attorney Mary Strobel as Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Superior Court judges.

Okamoto, 58, is a former prosecutor and a current partner in the law firm of Okamoto, Wasserman & Torii torii

Truck fire stops traffic on freeway

OXNARD - Hundreds of cars traveling along the Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. It is the principal east-west route through Ventura County and in the southern San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County.  were stranded for more an hour Friday when a tanker truck storing liquid oxygen caught fire, closing all northbound and southbound lanes, fire officials said.

The truck began leaking liquid oxygen, which ignited about 11 a.m. at 2150 Trabajo Drive, a road that fronts the freeway. All lanes of the freeway were reopened by 12:15 p.m., officials said

The driver suffered first-degree burns attempting to extinguish the blaze, authorities said.

Kennedy settles suit with guard

Primary turnout lowest in history

SAN JOSE - California's March 5 primary drew the lowest voter turnout in state history, according to Secretary of State Bill Jones, who officially certified the vote totals Friday.

Only 34.5 percent of registered voters cast a primary ballot. The previous turnout low of 35 percent was recorded during the June 7, 1994, primary.
