BRIEFLY 2 DIE, GIRL INJURED IN THREE-CAR CRASH.


PALMDALE - Three cars crashed, killing two people Wednesday and critically injuring a 7-year-old girl, fire officials reported.

The crash was reported at 5:19 p.m. at Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. Transient booked in beating death

VAN NUYS - A 33-year-old transient was in custody in connection with the beating death of another homeless man with whom he had a dispute over a dog, police announced Wednesday.

Nikolai Burkart was booked at Van Nuys jail Tuesday on suspicion of murder. He was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Burkart assaulted David Heino, a 36-year-old transient from the Van Nuys area, on Jan. 17 because he didn't like the way he was handling his dog, police said. Officers found Heino badly injured in the 14600 block of Ventura Boulevard Ventura Boulevard is one of the primary east-west thouroughfares in the San Fernando Valley; as it was originally a part of the El Camino Real (the trail between Spanish missions), Ventura Boulevard is the oldest route in the San Fernando Valley. It was also U.S. , police said.

Heino underwent emergency surgery for cerebral bleeding at Martin Luther King-Drew Medical Center and never recovered from his wound. He died Sunday.

Suicide probed in Metrolink death

COVINA - A 15-year-old boy who witnesses said deliberately stayed on railroad tracks was struck and killed by a commuter train Wednesday, the fifth fatal Metrolink incident this year.

The name of the boy, who was a 10th-grader at Charter Oak High School, was withheld by authorities. Information from witnesses and a note found in a backpack near the boy indicated that he committed suicide by standing on the tracks until he was struck about 7:50 a.m. by the app said Sgt. John Zumwalt of the Covina Police Department.

Villaraigosa wins Baca's backing

Kohl's makes gift for child safety

Kohl's Department Stores on Wednesday marked its entry into Southern California by announcing a $2.5 million commitment to support child safety and injury prevention programs at two Southland hospitals The department store chain is contributing $1.5 million to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and an additional $1 million to Children's Hospital of Orange County.
