BRIEFLY 120 DRIVERS DON'T BRAKE FOR SANTA.


VAN NUYS - Police cited 120 drivers on Saturday who failed to yield to an officer dressed as jolly ol' St. Nick as he walked in a crosswalk during an LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.

The Valley Traffic Division patrol operated at Victory Boulevard Victory Boulevard is a major thoroughfare on Staten Island, measuring approximately 8.0 miles (12.87 km) and stretching from the west shore community of Travis to the upper east shore communities of St. George and Tompkinsville.  and Ranchito Avenue, where an officer clad in a red suit and white beard walked back and forth in the crosswalk from 8 to 10 a.m., officials said.

The number of drivers cited was higher than in previous Santa stings, officials said, or in similar operations in the spring using an officer dressed as the Easter Bunny.

In a separate operation Saturday, police impounded about 120 unregistered cars in the Van Nuys area, officials said.

Van Nuys woman wins $60,000 pot

SACRAMENTO - A homemaker from Van Nuys won $60,000 on the California Lottery's Big Spin television show on Saturday.

Nancy Ward Nanye-hi ("One Who Goes About"), known in English as Nancy Ward (c. 1738–1822 or 1824) was a ghighua, or "beloved woman" of the Cherokee nation, which meant that she was allowed to sit in councils and to make decisions, along with the other Beloved Women, on  said she plans to take a vacation with her winnings.

Sports car driver is killed in crash

PANORAMA CITY - A man was killed early Saturday when he lost control of his speeding sports car and crashed into a telephone pole and a wall, police said.

Octavio Solis, 27, of North Hollywood was killed about 2 a.m. when he lost control of his 1997 Honda Del Sol as he approached a curve on Coldwater Canyon Boulevard near Saticoy Street, officials said.

Pops set to play New Year's show

THOUSAND OAKS - The Conejo Pops Orchestra, directed by Elmer Ramsey, will present its New Year's Eve Night in Vienna concert at 8 p.m. Dec. 31 in the Kavli Theater of the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza The Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza is a performing arts and administrative center located in Thousand Oaks, California. It was built in 1994 on the former site of "Jungleland" at a cost of $63.8 million. .

The concert will feature waltzes, marches, polkas, performances by a number of soloists, and dancers Jamie and Gail Arias.

The event is scheduled to end around 10:30 p.m. so patrons have time to go out and celebrate after the concert. For information, call (805) 449- ARTS.

SOUTH PASADENA - The Gold Line commuter train will muffle its warning bells at three intersections after noise complaints from residents.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the Gold Line trains that run through town, will insulate bells at the intersections to reduce their noise, shorten the length of time they ring, install sound walls near the tracks and put up safety gates.
