BRIEFLY : YOUNG VOLUNTEERS GIVEN SCHOLARSHIPS.


GLENDALE - Seven local students were awarded $1,000 or $500 recently from the 1998 Janet Banz Memorial Scholarship program to recognize their academic skill and interest in community service.

The scholarships, named for a woman who volunteered for nine years in the emergency department at Verdugo Hills Hospital, were presented by her husband, Ted, and Verdugo Hills Hospital Foundation President James J. Campbell.

Students receiving $1,000 scholarships are: Edward Osepans from Glendale Community College Glendale Community College can refer to one of two colleges in the United States.

  • Glendale Community College (California)
 and Lisa Narinian from Crescenta Valley High School Crescenta Valley High School is an secondary school located at 2900 Community Avenue in La Crescenta-Montrose, an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The school is a part of the Glendale Unified School District. .

Students receiving $500 scholarships are: Richelle Chautuan from Crescenta Valley High School, Heather Hinckley and Sanam Yassesri from Mayfield Senior School Mayfield Senior School is a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school founded in 1931 for young women grades 9-12, sponsored by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus and a member of the Holy Child Network of Schools and guided by the educational philosophy of the Society's , Jennifer Szasz from Glendale Community College, and Christina Yoo from Flintridge Preparatory School Flintridge Preparatory School, familiarily known as Prep, is a nonprofit, independent college preparatory day school for grades 7-12. Founded in 1933, it is located within the city limits of La Canada Flintridge, California, at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. .

Recipients must have done volunteer work for at least one year to qualify and are chosen based on academic merit, interest in the health care profession and demonstration of concern for others through community service.

Motorcyclist dies in head-on crash

LAKE VIEW TERRACE - A 30-year-old Burbank motorcyclist died in a collision Thursday morning after his cycle crossed a double yellow line and hit an oncoming vehicle, police said.

Michael James Marlow James Marlow (born November 7, 1960) was a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Congress in Georgia's 10th congressional district in northeast Georgia in the special election on June 19, 2007 to fill the vacancy left by the death of Republican Congressman Charlie Norwood on February , 30, was riding his cycle eastbound in the 9800 block of Foothill Boulevard The following streets are named Foothill Boulevard:
  • Foothill Boulevard (Southern California)
  • Foothill Boulevard (East Bay, California)
 at 11:35 a.m. when, for unknown reasons, it crossed the line and crashed into a Ford van, according to Los Angeles police Officer Dan Hudson. Marlow died at the scene.

Police do not know why Marlow's cycle crossed the line and did not issue a citation to the other driver.

Rescued student in critical condition

HOLLYWOOD - A 15-year-old boy, pulled from a pool at Hollywood High on Thursday afternoon by a lifeguard and a school custodian, was placed on life support at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

Ramirez said the sophomore, listed in critical condition, was spotted in the water ``just after a regular P.E. swimming class.''

Thirty other swimming class students were said to have been in or around the pool when the incident occurred.
