Ex-Times employee held in theft

 was arrested Wednesday on a warrant alleging he stole $800,000 by billing the newspaper for free-lance articles that were never written, authorities said.

Charles Boesch, 53, of Chino Hills was accused of preparing the fake invoices and article summaries over a four-year period and submitting them to the Times accounting department for payment to outside accomplices, said Deputy District Attorney Brent Collier.

Boesch, a 34-year employee, was fired in July.

Boesch was being held Wednesday night in lieu of $800,000 bail for investigation of grand theft.

Boesch's former son-in-law, Michael Wayne Coburn, 27, of La Verne also was arrested as an alleged accomplice.

City panel supports building cathedral

A City Council committee Wednesday recommended approval of the construction of a new Roman Catholic cathedral in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. Riordan nominates new commissioner

Mayor Richard Riordan on Wednesday nominated attorney Dominic Rubalcava for a post on the Board of Water and Power Commissioners.

Rubalcava, who has long been active in civic affairs serving on commissions under Mayor Tom Bradley as well as Riordan, is being nominated for a term that would end in 1999.

The nomination is subject to approval of the City Council.
