Fraud charge filed in earthquake case

Two public meetings have been scheduled for this month to let residents review and comment on the ambitious $25 million plan to develop Hansen Dam, officials have announced.

The first meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 13 at at Lake View Terrace Recreation Center, 11075 Foothill Blvd., with the second to be at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at Ritchie Valens Park, 10736 Laurel Canyon Blvd., Pacoima.

Officials said the meetings are designed to get initial community input on the plans that called for a wide variety of uses at the park from open space to soccer and baseball fields before going ahead with the next stage of the effort.

Boy has near brush with death in pool

A 12-year-old boy was hospitalized in serious condition after he almost drowned in a pool at his Northridge apartment complex Wednesday afternoon, according to Los Angeles Fire Department officials.

The boy was swimming in the pool at 8455 Lindley Ave. when he slipped under water for a few minutes, his baby sitter told paramedics. She ran for help, then jumped in the water to pull him out, according to Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Law to help schools on quake hazards

SYLMAR - Gov. Gray Davis on Wednesday signed into law a local legislator's bill to spend $75,000 to develop an educational pamphlet on nonstructural earthquake hazards in schools.

The pamphlet will be developed by the governor's Office of Emergency Services emergency services Emergency care '…services …necessary to prevent death or serious impairment of health and, because of the danger to life or health, require the use of the most accessible hospital available and equipped to furnish those services' , which works with local governments and schools on disaster preparedness, response and recovery, said Davis aide Michael Bustamante.

The pamphlet will focus on potential hazards such as light fixtures and school equipment.
