Police Commissioner Gerald Chaleff voiced support Tuesday for requiring LAPD vice officers to wear electronic wires that would record all conversations they have with criminal suspects.

Man shot to death outside liquor store

GRANADA HILLS - A 30-year-old man was shot to death while standing outside a liquor store early Tuesday morning, police said.

Female fire recruit injured in tower fall

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - A female firefighting recruit was seriously injured Tuesday when she fell about 50 feet off a tower used to familiarize trainees with climbing heights, officials said.

Mission College sets expansion meeting

Trying desperately to gain support in time to meet a fast-approaching deadline, Mission College will hold a massive public meeting Thursday night on the college's expansion plans.

Officials of the Sylmar-based college say the meeting, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Campus Center, is expected to draw 300 to 400 people.

Man's body found near busy boulevard

CANOGA PARK - A man was found dead during rush-hour traffic along Topanga Canyon Boulevard on Tuesday morning, police said.

Michael Munden, 43, of Agoura was found lying on the sidewalk near the curb in the 7300 block of Topanga Canyon Boulevard near Sherman Way at 7:35 a.m., said Detective Dave Szabo of the Los Angeles Police Department's West Valley Division. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nonurgent police calls get new line

Citing a crisis of an overloaded 911 telephone system, the Los Angeles Police Commission voted Tuesday to set up a single, 10-digit phone number for nonemergency police calls as an interim step while studying eventual creation of a 311 line for nonurgent calls.

More than 80 percent of the calls to 911 are not emergencies.
