Another corporate sponsor is coming forward with a $5 million donation for the stalled Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or , it was announced Friday.

Canyons preserve will honor Braude

Honoring a retiring city councilman for his environmental activism during 32 years in office, the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Sanitation District announced Friday that Rustic and Sullivan canyons would be declared the Marvin Braude Marvin Braude (August 11, 1920—December 7, 2005)served as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 11th district from 1965 to 1997. At various times Mr. Braude (pronounced BROW-dee) served as chair of the Finance and Revenue Committee, the Environmental Quality and Waste  Nature Preserve.

The declaration was announced at a City Hall ceremony by county Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and City Council President John Ferraro, who both serve on the Sanitation District's governing board.

Three men were arrested and more than a ton of abalone meat was seized following a yearlong sting in which suspected black-market dealers bought the tasty mollusks for shipment to Asia, authorities said Friday.

The California Fish and Game Department said 1,700 abalone worth $234,000 were seized Thursday at locations in San Jose and in Los Angeles County. About $20,000 in cash also was taken, investigators said.

Commercial abalone fishing is illegal in the North Coast.

City charging pair with wrecking nest

City Attorney Jim Hahn's office said Robert and Nicole Davis, who own the home, Bruce Howard, the owner of Top Notch tree service in Rowland Heights, and Steve O'Harra, the Top Notch foreman, were charged with destroying the nest of a bird of prey bird of prey

Mourners bury slain Simi Valley family

ADELANTO - Two dozen mourners buried a family of five at an Islamic cemetery, two days after the out-of-work father killed his wife and his children, then fatally shot himself outside their Simi Valley home.

One by one, friends and relatives carried to the mosque the bodies of Ahmad Salman, 44, his wife Nabela, 38, the couple's 5-year-old twins, Zaid and Zain, and 3-year-old son Yezen.

The family's neighbors said Salman was out of work and being treated for depression at the time of the slayings. A real estate agent said the family was in the process of selling the $169,000 home when Salman shot his family as they tried to flee the gray stucco house on Hope Street about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

 interim chief won't get Reno job

Interim Los Angeles Police Chief Bayan Lewis has lost his bid to become chief in Reno, Nev., it was announced Friday.

Officials in Reno said City Manager Dave McNalley had recommended the job go to Jerry Hoover, who has been chief in St. Joseph, Mo. The final selection will be up to the Reno City Council.

Brush fires doused in Griffith Park area

Firefighters on the ground and in the air managed to extinguish two brush fires Friday in a rugged area of Griffith Park.

The blazes, reported about 2:50 p.m., were in the Western Canyon area of Griffith Park, near Western Canyon Road, and Mount Hollywood Drive, city Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

 seeks restitution from city

A Northridge veterinarian, who treated a dog found partially skinned in Encino, said Friday he will seek restitution from the city stemming from a search of his clinic by Los Angeles Animal Services officials.

Dr. Melvyn Richkind said he will file a claim Monday against the city, the Department of Animal Services and some of its employees.
