BRIEFLY : WATER-RESCUE DRILL HOSPITALIZES DEPUTY.


SYLMAR - A sheriff's deputy nearly drowned Friday morning while taking part in a swift-water rescue drill in a turbulent aqueduct, deputies said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) is a local law enforcement agency that serves Los Angeles County, California.
 spokesman Bill Martin said.

``He was swept into a strong current and pulled into the water,'' Martin said.

Within 30 seconds the deputy was rescued by instructors, Martin said.

The man was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is a hospital in Mission Hills, California, USA. The hospital has 254 beds, and is part of Providence Health & Services. History  in Mission Hills, where he was treated for a slight concussion, cuts and bruises. He was listed in stable condition and expected to stay overnight, hospital officials said.

Chopper-riding dog wins case on ticket

VAN NUYS - A municipal court judge Friday dismissed misdemeanor charges against Jeremiah Gerbracht, the owner of Lady Harley, the motorcycle-riding dog.

 hitched a ride into court Friday morning with Gerbracht, who has been ticketed on two occasions for allowing her to ride on the covered gas tank of his bike.

Gerbracht, a Woodland Hills resident, beat a similar ticket a year ago.

The latest ticket, given Oct. 1 on Ventura Boulevard, was issued as an infraction Violation or infringement; breach of a statute, contract, or obligation.

The term infraction is frequently used in reference to the violation of a particular statute for which the penalty is minor, such as a parking infraction.

The charge was dismissed due to lack of proof that proper notice was given, said a representative for Gerbracht's attorney.

``Anyone trying to prevent Harley from getting the worldwide fame that she deserves is a stumbling block,'' Gerbracht said, referring to his plans to land a movie deal for Lady Harley.

Police arrest man in neighbor's death

TEMPLE, Texas - A male neighbor who had a clear view into the apartment of a television reporter who formerly worked for The Associated Press was charged Friday with killing her.

Anthony Gary Silvestri, 21, of Temple was taken into custody Thursday morning, covered with blood, in the apartment of KWTX reporter Kathryn Dettman, who was a graduate of California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an . Preliminary autopsy results indicated Dettman suffered numerous stab wounds to the upper body. A screwdriver and other items believed used to kill Dettman were recovered at the scene, police said.

Temple Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said Silvestri could see into Dettman's apartment from his own unit.

``You can look out his window and look into Kathryn's apartment,'' the police chief said.
